Your first, and enduring, impression of the places you will be staying in will have you wondering why South Africa is regarded as a third world country whereas the UK isn't! To be more specific, you will be asking how South African hotels can offer such high standards at such a low price. After 50 years this still astounds us! South Africans are a very demanding people requiring the highest level of service, cleanliness and decor. If hotels don't supply just that, they will quickly go out of business.

Most of the country hotels we offer still rely largely on the domestic tourist. This is changing but the dedication to quality remains. Of course, all hotels and businesses can have their off moments and we rely on feedback from our clients as much as we do on our frequent visits, generally unannounced, to the hotels we feature. We do de-list hotels and there are some chains, often used by the tour operators that we will not use because we don't feel their service is a true reflection of the quality and value you should expect in South Africa. Many of the hotels we recommend are classified by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa as Guesthouses. We regard this as misleading and confusing for British travellers who are used to an altogether different experience of establishments called Guesthouses in the UK. In South Africa these are small hotels, some owner run, and a number of the properties on this site have highly regarded restaurants. Some don't have full facilities but they are in locations where you will want experience the variety on offer locally. This, after all, can be fun.
