Jock Safari Lodge

Jock Safari Lodge, Southern Kruger Park

A rare private safari lodge in the Kruger Park, Note that malaria precautions are required for this location

We regard this as one of the best-kept secrets of the Kruger Park. One of the original private concessions in the Kruger Park, this lodge has been extensively refurbished and is now part of the Shamwari Dubai World Group. There is an impressively equipped Wellness Centre offering extensive pampering after a hard day watching game. The main lodge has 12 suites and there is a family lodge. Each suite is beautifully appointed and very private. The bedroom is centred around a four-poster bed complete with mosquito net and a view from the bed and the bathroom of the adjacent riverbed. The outside deck extends to a private viewing deck overlooking the valley and comes complete with its own plunge pool for cooling off in the heat of the day. Each suite has its own outside shower again in complete privacy. The central facilities are excellent with pool, elevated bar and extensive dining area overlooking the valley. Evening meals are often served buffet style in the boma around a log fire to complete the atmosphere.

About the Location

Game drives are included and are guided by experienced rangers who will drive you off road in the lodge’s concession area but also into the surrounding park for a complete game watching experience. The lodge gets its name from the book written by Sir Percy Fitzpatrick chronicling his hunting adventures 120 years ago with his Jack Russell Terrier called Jock and you will see memorials to the plucky little dog all over this part of South Africa. In honour of his memory, during the cooler months, the lodge creates a tented camp complete with outside bucket showers in order to recreate the feel of exploration in the 19th century. We consider this an excellent alternative to the numerous lodges in the private reserves adjoining the Kruger Park. Please note that this is a medium risk malaria area so you should consult your physician to take appropriate anti – malaria medication.

Eight Bells Mountain Inn

Eight Bells Mountain Inn, Robinson Pass, Garden Route

Eight Bells Mountain Inn is great for families in a beautiful location

Eight Bells is a charming, well-established country inn in the midst of the beautiful Robinson Pass over the Outeniqua Mountains between Mossel Bay (30 minutes’ drive) and Oudtshoorn (20 minutes’ drive).  Accommodation is very comfortable mainly in cabin style rooms and suitable for children. The Inn is unusually well equipped for children with a good pool, snooker table and horse riding. For the energetic, the surrounding countryside is good for hiking particularly in the spring and autumn (September / October and April / June). The restaurant provides good food and we recommend trying their milk tart.

About Eight Bells’ Location

The inn is close to two Ostrich show farms. These are based on two ‘Feather Palaces’ built at the end of the 1800s and  you will be able to experience these intriguing birds up close. In the nearby town of Oudtshoorn you can find some excellent outlets for goods made out of ostrich leather. You are also fairly close to the beaches between Mossel Bay (rather industrial) and Wilderness (approximately a 30 minute drive). If you are feeling energetic, drive the Swartberg Pass. The pass is a mainly gravel road approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Eight Bells. Just before you arrive at the pass, you will see the world renowned Cango Caves which are definitely worth visiting. Once on the pass, at the summit (in Afrikaans called Die Top) you will see a road to Die Hel. You can drive 2 1/2 hours into a valley that was left undisturbed by modern life until 1962. At the far end of the pass, you will arrive at pretty Prince Albert. A shorter drive will take you to Calitzdorp which is the centre of South African port production. You will be able to visit some excellent port wineries.

Coral Tree Cottages

Coral Tree Cottages, Nr. Plettenberg Bay

Coral Tree Cottages is one of our favourite locations for families

Coral Tree Cottages have 3 single bedroom cottages and 3 double bedroom cottages. Each cottage is brick built and thatched. Each cottage has a lounge and dining area, fully equipped kitchen and well-maintained and decorated bathroom. The decoration is classic and the cottages are maintained to a  high standard. One of the two bedroom cottages has the benefit of its own swimming pool. All the cottages have a private garden area with braai (barbecue) facilities. The cottages are conveniently situated close to the main N2 road. As you drive down the gravel drive you enter a different world with exotic trees and plants in the beautifully landscaped grounds. Because of the way the cottages are located, the impression is that you are  miles from civilisation. There is also a communal pool set in the gardens and, thoughtfully, there is a children’s play area next to the owner’s cottage. However, this is not just for children and families as the one-bedroom cottages are also ideal for couples looking for a quiet and inexpensive retreat with some wonderful nature walks into the surrounding Harkerville Forest.

About Coral Tree Cottages’ Location

Plettenberg Bay with its three beautiful beaches and excellent shopping is only 7 minutes drive away. Knysna is a 10-minute drive in the opposite direction and close by is the Knysna Elephant Park where you can get very close to their three charming elephants. A little further and at The Crags there are a number of animal parks. Here you can get close to indigenous small cats, monkeys, birds, elephants and even snakes.
